HAIR ORNAMENTS
Hair ornaments, when adorning oneself, were considered very important to women in Korea. In Joseon period, hair ornaments flourished into distinguished characteristics and developed into various forms of ornaments. Hair ornaments were worn to show women’s exquisite and modest beauty.

Its various forms include hairpin, ornamental hairpin, hair-parting implement, hair ribbon, crown like headpiece, and etc.

2) DWIKKOJI & BICHIGAE PART 1

The dwikkoji, decorative and practical hairpins, were inserted into chignon, since the Joseon Dynasty.

The bichigae, a tool for parting hair and for cleaning comb, were used in a similar way as dwikkoji. It also had a practical use as it was used as an earpick and a stick to part hair.

Apart from ornamental use these hairpins were inserted into a hairdo to hold it in place. Usually, it was usually shaped like an inverted “U” with sharp ends.

It was also more widely used after the ban of wearing gachae (hair extension).

It was perhaps the smallest of hair ornaments, some being simply decorative and others functional. Most dwikkoji’s were made of silver or nickel.

The head was in the shape of among others a flower, butterfly, peach or phoenix and decorated with colorful enamels.

Sometimes they were made of jade or coral carved into beautiful shapes and were used in the palace or by the noble ladies.
